copyright infringemet
« on: December 07, 2007, 06:51:42 am »

Hello,
I paid to become a license member and downloaded the current helpdesk script.  I did NOT remove the copyright notice from the script.  There is a form I created that uses formmail.php and sends the data to helpdesk.  The script was working for about 5 1/2 months and then the notice below appeared:
_____________________________________
COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT
You cannot delete our copyright information.
_____________________________________

Again, the copyright information was not removed.  I'm curious why this notice showed up.  How do I fix this?  How can I activate this program again.  Please help.

Thanks,
Mikan

I am very unhappy with helpdesk.  I paid for the license and did not removed any copyright information.  My database was completely wiped out.  I have written an email to info@finexe.com regarding this matter but the email  was returned to me (it was undeliverable.)  If the script didn't do this, then helpdesk must be unsecured to have someone hack it.  In anycase, since I am not getting any support from this site, I am going to completely remove all the files relating to helpdesk from our server and move into a different ticket system.

Hi mikan,

Check that you have not left the install.php on your server after installation, if you leave it there, anyone can wipe out your database.

I guess if someone has done this to your database, or got into your system somehow, it might have triggered the copyright infringement notice .... however, the notice is just a notice, it will not affect your system in any other way.

Hello AbsolutelyFreeWeb,
I'm going to do a complete install and put a password protection on the directory as extra protection.  I like your helpdesk and have customized the layout.  I don't want to start from scratch again with another script. Just for your information, when I installed the script again, the installation automatically deleted the install.php file.  I did this twice, just to make sure.

Our users submit the requests on a form that I created, not the helpdesk form. Helpdesk is used to manage the requests.

Ok. I reinstalled the script.  It won't work on a password directory because it will not fetch email messages.  If it happens again, how do I activate it without reinstalling the script?

Mikan,

please also check if the upgrade directory is still there and remove it if it is.

I'm sorry to hear it all and makes me worried there could be a security hole.

To be prepared for such things, please do mysql backups regularly, then if it would happen, you can re-install, then restore the database, and you would not lose any tickets or users.

Since I was doing a fresh install, I didn't think I would need it.  So,  I did not upload the upgrade directory to begin with.
I will make weekly backups of the database.  Thanks again.

Apple wins copyright infringement case against Psystar in California
« Reply #7 on: November 21, 2009, 05:38:52 am »

Apple's won its copyright infringement claim against would-be Mac cloner Psystar in California. Anyone surprised? As we've been saying all along, the key argument wasn't the OS X EULA or Psystar's failed monopoly claims, but pure, simple copyright infringement, since Psystar was illegally copying, modifying, and distributing Apple's code. Psystar was also dinged for circumventing Apple's kernel encryption in violation of the Digital Millenium Copyright Act, but that's just another nail in the coffin, really. There's still some legal fireworks to come, as Apple's various other claims like breach of contract, trademark infringement, and unfair competition weren't addressed in this ruling, but those are all secondary issues now -- and we'd expect this decision to have quite an impact on the other case currently ongoing in Florida. We've broken down the highlights after the break, hit up the read link for the PDF and follow along.

Torrents and p2p networks are not illegal by themselves. It is the material that gets transfered that is illegal. If a torrent or p2p network has copyright material on it, then under civil law it is the responsibility of the originator of the copyright material to take legal action against them (and most do). The problem is that a lot of these people will just back up shop and move somewhere else.

The only time that piracy becomes a federal crime is if you sell copyright material that you don't have the authority to sell (ie your selling stolen goods). There have been a couple of cases in the US where people have been nailed for selling copyright material (in one case the guy was sentenced to 10 years in jail).
