web design purpose
« on: November 23, 2009, 01:38:32 am »

It is essential to define the purpose of the website as one of the first steps in the planning process. A purpose statement should show focus based on what the website will accomplish and what the users will get from it. A clearly defined purpose will help the rest of the planning process as the audience is identified and the content of the site is developed. Setting short and long term goals for the website will help make the purpose clear and plan for the future when expansion, modification, and improvement will take place. Goal setting practices and measurable objectives should be identified to track the progress of the site and determine success.

This largely depends on what you want to do with your website...I can offer a little info, though:

Apache is a webserver. You will need to run this on your machine (or a sever you have) to deliver the content to the web. Apache is a robust, typically complete webserver that will serve most of your needs. Plus, there is lots and lots of documentation on it.

HTML is essential to web design, but is sort of limited by itself. You will definitely need some javascript implimented into your code if you want to do more complex things. I recommend learning HTML first, then learning javascript.

PHP/MySQL are database managers and will be useful if you want to run a dating site...or practically anything else that handles relatable information.

Visual Studio & Dreamweaver are web editors and will allow you, once you have a good understanding of web code, to create more robust applications. I wouldn't worry about messing with these until down the road.

And really, there is no "wrong" technology. Everything you learn can be implemented in some way or another. You'll find that a broad knowledge of code theory and basic design goes a long way and is often required for more complex projects.

Good luck and I hope this helped!

A website to share information may not require as many features as a site that sells something. One thing you have to consider is if you are going to allow visitors to add comments or additional resources to your site. This would require additional features from your website hosting.

*Your business has a purpose

*Your life has a purpose
*So should your website!

Even though our name is Purpose Web Design, we are more than designers. In fact, I would argue that Purpose Web Design is more of a marketing firm composed of people who are experts at helping the local business get more sales, sharpen their corporate image, and save money through websites. A website is a marketing tool with a purpose. For example, a website without a purpose is like a yacht without a navigation system. It may look cool and have a lot of features, but at the same time is useless for setting voyage. The purpose of a website sets the company in the right direction online. It's vital!
